Guidance

Foreigners may apply for an extension of stay (1 year visa) for main three reasons:

1. Working
2. Family
3. Retirement

Note that education is another reason to obtain an extension of stay as well.

Working reasons (non-immigrant B visa)
- business purpose e.g. employee or partner etc.
- working related to an investment with Ministry or Bureau or Department
- working for government agency, state enterprise or government office
- investment purpose e.g. purchase of condo, government bond, state enterprise bond
- teacher or professor or person of expertise working for a state owned or private educational institution
- enrollment in a state owned or private educational institution
- mass media function
- missionary
- skilled worker or expert in medicine, nursing or other profession for technology transfer to Thais
- installation for repairing machines, aircraft or ocean vessels
- entertainer, vocalist, musician at a hotel or entertainment company in Thailand which has a paid-up capital of at least 20 million baht

Family (non-immigrant O visa)
- being family member of the permitted foreigner in relation to an educational visa (especially for parents, spouse, child or adopted child or the child of a spouse
- being family member of a Thai national (especially for parents, spouse, child, adopted child, or spouse's child)
- being family member of a permanent residence permit holder (especially for parents, spouse, child, adopted child, or spouse's child)
- being family member of a permitted foreigner who has been granted an extension of stay based upon working, education or retirement (especially for parents, spouse, child, adopted child, or spouse’s child)
